Flash Flood Challenge

K5- 5th grade are gaining a better understanding of flooding and dam designs. This week they watched a short National Geographic video on flooding. They were surprised to find out that flooding does not only occur as a result of rain.

They were then given this challenge: A storm is coming and you must design and build a dam that will stop the flood and save your village. The available materials were 10 logs, 10 rocks, and putty. First the students had to design their dam on a handout. When they were satisfied with their design, they then created it and tested it. They found out that building a successful dam was much harder then it seemed.
